RE: Early (Mechanical) Cummins 8.3 boost??

First thing is to verify that your C8.3 engine is developing full boost already and there are no intercooler leaks. If that is fine, then you are good to go.
You need a fuel plate, an EGT guage/pyrometer, and you need to be able to tweak the boost (wastegate control). The Banks kit gives you a new turbo housing - but it is no different than the standard Holset housing the engine has.
Whether you go with a Banks kit, or put something together you really should get it to a dyno for proper tweaking. The Banks kit is good, but there is more mpg/power to be gained with a couple of dyno runs. The graphs they show you are dyno'd coaches.
If you go to an ISC 8.3, the Banks kit is a plug and play with full control and cutback due to its electronic engine. If you get too near EGT limits it will automatically dial back your power. With the mechanical engine you have to watch the guage under heavy loads (like uphill, WOT, etc) at times when you might be a bit busy and its inconvenient.
That said, I loved my Banks tweaked C8.3 Foretravel...

RE: January issue of FMCA magazine....?

Ford and GM jointly developed the new 6 speed auto that is in most of the towables listed for them. That is why so many of their vehicles are now towable 4 down.

RE: Textron to stop financing boats

I financed my first Foretravel through E-Trade, who got bought out by GEMB. This summer I got a letter that GEMB was exiting RV financing. They are holding their existing loans, but not doing any new...

RE: Dealer tactics

Along with a drop in sales in this economy comes a drop in service. This is due to the fact that many people will park their coach and delay maintenance/repairs.
There aren't many places that will 'pass' on servicing your coach these days because you didn't buy it there. The service and sales groups do not conspire to determine who didn't buy there.
What if you just moved to town and owned an RV? Are you supposed to go to the end of the line because you moved?
If it were me, I would have a short, pointed conversation with the GM or owner. I would be happy to explain just how many sales and how much service they could potentially lose due to the shenanigans of their sales force when you spread this tale to your friends and family...
This is the reason that the great dealers thrive in this kind of market - they don't tolerate this kind of BS and their customers go out of their way to support them.

RE: Dealer tactics

This is just BS.
Why don't you tell the dealer what you wrote. Tiffin will approve warranty work just about anywhere. I would ask them if the would do warranty work if you were just 'passing through'.
Dealers get paid for warranty work - just at a lower rate than non warranty work.

RE: "Direct Injection Will Lead Way For Fuel Savings"

Audi and VW really led the way with direct injection on their diesels and then their gas engines. My 04 TDI uses 'pump duese' technology. There is no central high pressure pump. Each electronically controlled injector functions as its pump for that injector. That gives me 41 mpg highway with an automatic. The new FSI diesels are getting nearly 50 with an automatic and more weight.

RE: Will prices continue to fall?

Used unit prices will continue to fall. Dealers are trying to clear out credit lines. People who lose jobs that can't make payments will default and allow the repo. Manufacturer's will reduce prices to clear out excess inventory. People who can afford to wait it out won't sell for now because their prices have declined below their payoff.
The RV situation won't improve until after the market comes back and the public has confidence enough to renew discretionary spending..

RE: exhaust or jacob brake

Engine compression brakes are only fitted to larger engines (>9L). For Cummins, that means ISL/ISM/M11/ISX. No dice on ISC/ISB/C8.3/B5.9...

RE: Michelin Super Singles anyone?

A couple of people on IRV2 have done it, like them. New rims under 500 each, tires about 1000 each. Depends on how much the tire dealer is willing to give you on the old rims/tires for total price.

RE: I'm getting so scared about my purchase, I'm ready to vomit

a. You can ALWAYS sell it. You MAY NOT like the price you get.
b. Unless its an absolutely phenomenal once in a lifetime deal, I doubt that they have people lined up to buy it.
c. If you are that conflicted, wait.
d. This should be a positive, exciting experience. I've found if it's supposed to be, its easy. If its not, then you shouldn't do it...
e. Take the extended warranty money and put it in the bank. You can always get one later, likely far cheaper.
f. You're a surgeon - if you are not sure what you are doing, DON'T DO IT.

RE: Stunning Newell coach!

If you look at depreciation of 20-30% a year, that pricing is about for a 5 year old coach, even at 1.2 mill.
I guess a 42" TV lift could have cost 8100.00 in Sept of '03...

RE: RV industry and the economy

I know of two people buying used in the next month. Cash buyers, getting great deals. The market is soft and it will get worse. I spoke to two dealer friends. They can't get a bank to talk to them w/o at least 20% down.
My investments are down 40%, but I've got nearly 15 years before my second retirement and 3rd income stream from those investments. I'm not worrying. We're cutting back to concentrate on paying for what we've already bought.
That won't stop us from going camping this next weekend. I've got half a tank of fuel and no need to refuel and we're only going 60 miles. I'll fill up my 150 gallon tank when diesel drops below 2 bucks a gallon.

RE: Really Need Info re Detroit Diesel 8V92TA

The Silver Series DDEC models used in the last 5 or so years were the best. Mileage was still lower, and they leaked some. You either love them or hate them. One thing people don't realize is that as a 2 stroke they have very little low end torque. They are also very sensitive to overheating.
The fact is there are just too many great deals out there now on newer coaches for most people to want to bother with one.
I have a friend who is getting ready to close a deal on a 99 single slide Foretravel 40 footer (ISM, Allison with retarder) for what is likely in the low nineties. The coach is in great shape - including new tires and batteries. That's 50K under what it would have sold for just 3 or 4 months ago. For those not minding a non slide unit I could point you to a couple of full body paint ones for sale that the previous owners literally poured money into and maintained fanatically.

RE: Next ? - Old Prevost or younger 'mass-production' rig??

'Best buys' in the high end market (Prevost, Newell) are still in the $200K range.
That will get you a 95-99 Prevost or a double slide 98-2000 Newell. Go back farther than that and you lose a LOT of technology.
The upper end market (CC Magna, Monaco Signature, Foretravel, etc) $150-200K, year, length and option dependent.
One of our Foretravel salesmen friends was saying the other day that good coaches are getting into the range of a new Escalade. Sad but true.

RE: Cat 3208.....Whats your opinion?????

3208Ts in Foretravels are loved by their owners. It was a well designed coach, with the GVW low enough to provide good performance. One owner replaced his with a later model (U280/C8.3 Cummins & 6 speed) and still missed his old reliable 3208...
The 4 speed/6 speed discussion is a moot point. You have what you have. When I had my 4 speed, the coach did everything I wanted it to. Once you are in 4th it doesn't matter. The rear end ratio gives you the correct speed for your engine. I now have a 6 speed and it doesn't give me anything more.

RE: Home built genturi (Update, parts list)

And lastly of course is the genset warranty will be voided if they determine that you have ever used one of these devices on their genset. I have discussion back and forth on this issue and I have talked with manufacturer factory reps and they have indicated that definitely "NO genturi type devices can be used and if so, your warranty is void, period."
'nuff said IMHO.
Bill has a 97 and I have a 95. We don't fret warranties.

RE: Propane vs. All electric

I prefer propane over all electric.. If camping in cooler weather, the propane furnaces will run all night without having to run the generator. I don't like electric heat pumps anyway.. they just don't provide the warmth of gas. Gas assorption refers are very efficent. You can run a gas refer on 30 gal of propane for over 250 days.
Gas absortion is horrendously inefficient. The freon cycle using Danfoss compressors is far more energy friendly. When is the last time you saw an Energy Star rating on an Absorption unit?
Novacool and Sunfrost make super efficient reefers for 12V or 110V operation that drop your energy consumption by 75%. The boat industry has used them for years. The use of 4" plus insulation makes the difference. The cost is equivalent to a high end Dometic. Sunfrost will custom build you one. You can also buy the compressor kits and build your own.
http://www.backwoodssolar.com/catalog/refrigerators.htm
http://www.sunfrost.com/
I've been waiting for MH manufacturers to 'go green' and begin offering these super efficient units. Dometic and Norcold flat rip us off with poorly designed/insulated units using 75 year old technology.
